Hearty Nutrition Health Coaching:
I practice a holistic approach to nutrition, which means that I look at how all areas of your life are connected. Does stress at your job or in your relationship cause you to overeat? Does lack of sleep or low energy prevent you from exercising? As we work together, we look at how all parts of your life affect the whole. Since no one diet works for everyone, fad diets really don’t work in the long run. A balanced approach to nutrition includes more high-quality, organic vegetables, fruits, complex carbohydrates, protein, water; and less inflammatory and artificial foods. I also look at your age, health, activity level, blood type, metabolic rate and personal preferences to determine your dietary needs. Healthy relationships, a fulfilling career, regular physical activity and a spiritual practice are essential forms of nourishment. When these “primary foods” are balanced, what you eat becomes secondary.
I received my training to practice Health Counseling at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, which is the only nutrition school integrating all the different dietary theories—combining the knowledge of traditional philosophies with modern concepts like the USDA food pyramid, the glycemic index, the Zone and raw foods. My certification is pending and will be completed in June. For more information about my education, please go to www.integrativenutrition.com.
I have spent most of my adult life interacting with cultures other than my own. I lived and worked in rural Central America for six years, spending most of my time in northern Guatemala training indigenous women as health promoters and community leaders. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, I trained in ministry and counseling at Harvard Divinity School and have served as a chaplain at Williams College in Western Massachusetts.
Since 1998 I have worked in Washington DC as an advocate on international hunger, human rights and economic justice issues. I have traveled extensively throughout east and southern Africa, Central and South America. I speak Spanish fluently.
